substrate? They are both ecosystems - void of the sterility of contemporary building materials. They both evoke an architecture of architecture - a web of architectures both micro and macro, nested and nesting. WHO ARE WE?&nbsp; Rural Futurisms is a collective of writers, designers, cultural practitioners, a historian, and a climate activist imagining futures of rurality through Southern perspectives. Founded in 2023 by Lesego Bantsheng, the non-profit organisation is rooted in northern South Africa and is dedicated to decolonising the archive, building community agency, and addressing climate justice through design, storytelling, and situated practice. We function as a slow organisation, intentionally taking on one or two projects each year to foster intensional entanglements with the communities we collaborate with. This allows us to build long-term relationships rather than time-bound outputs, and to situate our work in processes of listening, co-creation, and intergenerational dialogue. Our practice engages with the material libraries and cosmologies of rural contexts, exploring how communities design their futures through material practices, oral histories, food systems, kinship structures, and experimentation. The outcomes of our projects range from platform archives, workshops, and participatory research to spatial interventions and experimental compositions with materials such as clay and mycelium co-created and imagined with rural custodians. Rural Futurisms advances a lexicon of design by agency – positioning design not as product-driven but as a catalytic practice for reimagining rural life outside extractive paradigms. This has exercised key competencies in Ruth – that of critical and creative thinking and the formation of ideas and concepts; design representation and communication (both digitally and by hand); time management; organisation; and the ability to work productively independently, and within a team. She has demonstrated her leadership skills in her role as lead landscape architect on a project team on numerous projects. He is a Masters (MArch) graduate (2020) from the Graduate School of Architecture (University of Johannesburg) and completed his Bachelors of Science in Architecture at the University of Pretoria in 2015. His academic interests explored literary and filmic devices that are used to render the domestic setting and/or urban spaces, through time and geography, ‘unheimlich’ or unhomely, by using Freud’s ‘The Uncanny’, Homi Bhabha’s theory of ‘unhomely’ and Anthony Vidler’s definition of the phenomena. Karabo also enjoys exploring themes of curatorship and exhibits, of museums as a tool of material culture and value making, of counternarratives, of innovative forms of archiving, and of unearthing and layering stories of/about artefacts, buildings and spaces. Apart from academia and architecture, his obsessions include typography and graphic design, photography, film, writing, music, reading and listening to insightful and critical conversations. He is also the lead coordinator for the Climate Justice Deal research, to create a comprehensive macroeconomic framework for South Africa built on climate justice principles to meet the environmental and socioeconomic challenges of the country within the shifting context of the crisis. He is also a speaker and climate justice educator, who facilitates workshops and lectures on climate justice for community activists, students and trade unionists. Buthelezi’s research interests are in alternative economic systems, economic history, development, political economy, political ecology, and climate justice. Before joining COPAC, Buthelezi was an associate and researcher at the Institute for African Alternatives (IFAA) and an organiser for the Inaugural Re-thinking Economics for Africa Festival (at the University of the Witwatersand). Buthelezi has an MA in Development Studies form the University of the Witwatersrand. This community-centered initiative is part of the South Designs constellation, supported by funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project seeks to investigate materials of making in rural environments and their intrinsic connection to the cosmologies of the people who inhabit them. At its heart, Rural Futurisms explores how the communities of Makgobistad and Disaneng envision and design planetary futures by engaging with both traditional and contemporary design-making technologies. By fostering a dialogue between heritage practices and innovative approaches, the project highlights the transformative potential of rural creativity and its role in shaping sustainable futures. 02 on methods (informally) Our exploration is channelled through the geography of home and discursive registers of family history as modes of meaning-making. We treated the village as an archive, searching through homes as files and memories as pages. We conceive of the home as constituted by an archive and museum of traditional bio and geo artefacts. It is also an anchoring point in a thread that navigates through lineage, and finds within the village, the artefacts valued in the existing hierarchy of a society. In our explorations in the village, we wondered and followed threads from family ties, depending on the fragile recollections of the old and those around them. 03on participantsMembers of the immediate and neighbouring communities of Makgobistad and Disaneng, predominantly Setswana-speaking, were invited to participate in interactive workshops and a mud-hut construction that marked the conclusion of our on-site investigation. We aimed to engage community members with invaluable cultural knowledge and skills, including craft makers, artists, artisans, traditional healers, spiritual practitioners, builders, elders, and youth. They became a primary source of cultural and traditional knowledge, providing the framework for our workshops and facilitating the exchange of insights between and within community participants and ourselves as researchers. The workshops encouraged collaborative explorations of intuitive clay crafting, speculative material combinations through clay and mycelium, and&nbsp; traditional Setswana architectural techniques and space-making methods, which have been rendered fragile by modernity, climate change, and globalisation. Participants also contributed their expertise and physical efforts to the mud-hut construction, to which they become custodians of. 04why this archive This archive is assembled as a counter-current and underscored by a textual, visual, and sonic critique of inherently colonial discourses of knowledge-making and record-keeping. In our attempts to piece together, preserve, and amplify the ‘hidden transcripts’ of a society on the margins of national heritage and memory, we worked with rural craft-makers, recorded evanescent ch/oral histories, and constructed an experimental hut-lab-cum physical archive in order to preserve indigenous heritage using community-facing indigenous knowledge systems. 05 Rural Futurisms Makgobistad Hut Lab Rural Futurisms: A living archive and experimental practice rooted in Makgobistad, North West. Through the Hut-Lab and a series of clay and mycelium-based workshops, we explore the past, present, and future of rural materiality. This project emerges through community-led making, critical storytelling, and co-design – responding to climate change, revaluing indigenous knowledge, and imagining new rural futures. By learning from traditional building processes as much as from the materials themselves, we uncover methods of care, reciprocity, adaptability, and collective authorship in spatial practice. central to our methodology, rooted in recognizing the spatial intelligence embedded in rural landscapes and the knowledge carried by their inhabitants. Workshops play a pivitol role in this process, acting as platforms for shared learning, dialogue, and co-creation. They allow us to engage with local expertise while developing collective approaches to design and problem-solving. Earth and Clay&nbsp; Bridging Past and Future Introduction Earth and clay have been central materials in the cultural and spatial morphology of Makgobistad, South Africa. Their historical utility in constructing homes and artefacts is emblematic of the rich traditions of the community. Within the Rural Futurisms project, the trajectories of earth and clay are examined not only as relics of the past but also as materials with potential to adapt and innovate in response to contemporary challenges such as climate change and rural economic resilience. Historical Context and Significance In Makgobistad, earth and clay once served as the foundation of daily life, used to build homes, craft pots, and support agricultural activities. Mud houses, constructed with mixtures of earth, clay, and cow dung, symbolized traditional knowledge and resilience. Clay pots and earthen artefacts, intricately adorned and functional, played significant roles in rituals, food preparation, and storage. However, the introduction of modern building materials has relegated earth and clay to symbolic roles, preserved primarily for their cultural value. Findings on Site Through site visits, the project identified a decline in the production and use of earth and clay artefacts. Mud houses, while cherished for their historical and spiritual significance, are often replaced by brick-and-mortar structures, reflecting a shift toward perceptions of modernity and permanence. Artefacts that remain are typically stored or displayed as cultural symbols rather than tools for daily use. Yet, in these homes, earth and clay retain a quiet vitality, symbolizing continuity and adaptation. Innovation and Workshops The workshops held in Makgobistad explored earth and clay's potential to embody both heritage and innovation. Participants created objects reflective of the materials’ past utility and their imagined future. Traditional vessels coexisted with speculative designs such as furniture and architectural elements, showcasing the potential of earth and clay as sustainable and climate-adaptive materials. The process illuminated opportunities for hybrid approaches, combining traditional knowledge with contemporary techniques to address both cultural preservation and ecological resilience. Mycelium Envisioning Rural Futures through Bio-Based Innovation Introduction Introduction As the Rural Futurisms project seeks to address climate change and sustainability in rural contexts, mycelium has emerged as a material of interest for its probiotic properties and adaptability. The project investigates the potential of mycelium to complement traditional materials such as clay, fostering a dialogue between past practices and future-forward innovations. Characteristics and Potential Mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi, offers a unique combination of versatility and sustainability. When cultivated with agricultural residues or similar substrates, mycelium can be shaped into materials with properties such as insulation, fire resistance, and biodegradability. These characteristics position mycelium as an alternative to more environmentally taxing materials. Additionally, its ability to grow within molds introduces possibilities for custom-designed artefacts, building elements, and everyday objects. Experimentation and Observations In preliminary offsite tests, the project explored mycelium’s compatibility with clay. The team experimented with varying ratios of mycelium, clay, and other substrates, discovering that while clay inhibited aggressive growth, the combination held potential for hybrid material innovation. Workshops in Makgobistad demonstrated the practical and conceptual possibilities of mycelium. Participants cast mycelium objects, such as candle holders, while engaging in conversations about adaptability and rural material futures. Community Insights Introducing mycelium to the community sparked critical discussions about its accessibility and applicability. Participants expressed curiosity about integrating mycelium into rural material practices while voicing concerns about the feasibility of cultivating it under local conditions.
